Practical Magic: The Nokian Rain Boot
Let’s talk about practicality, shall we? There’s no reason that being sensible can’t be fun. This little dose of philosophy is brought you by my life experiences in travel, relationships, sex, food–you name it. If it’s not fun and not grounded in some kind of reality, then it’s probably not worth it. This is definitely the case with fashion. Enter my experiment with the Nokian Boot.
These colorful, cozy, easy-to-wear rain boots entered my closet just in time for Hurricane Florence. The rain seems to keep coming down here in Richmond, too. All I had for rain boots until now were some fleece-lined Coach boots. I love them, but I have to sit down and pull them on with two hands every time I wear them. And I COOK in them, which is not quite right for all my hustling and bustling in the steam of a late Virginia summer. They’re only fit for February walks in the snow.
On the contrary, I slipped on the Nokian Hai boots in red with a blazer for a work friendly rainy day look. Is that proper office attire? No. But what is proper office attire nowadays? I was comfy and smiled every time I looked down at my feet. For a more casual concert look, I paired a new favorite leather skirt with the more simple Low Hai boots. I’d easily rock this with a more dressed up look for a funky twist on rainy day work wear.

Get the Boots
I’ve written about Rider Boot and the family behind the brand three times. The first time, I offered a history of the Richmond-bred brand in RVA Magazine. The second time, I penned an article for Richmond Magazine about the family’s new approach to tanning leather. The third time, I had stopped in the store to help a friend pick out new boots. Owner Ron sent me away with some of the espadrilles they stocked. If there were a pin in an espadrille grenade, he pulled it. I wrote this article all about my favorite shoe of summer 2018.
Here I am again. Why? Because I love a good story, people with an eye for aesthetics, and, well, good people. Not only does the store create some of the most wearable boots I’ve ever seen, they discover brands like the Finnish Nokian Footwear and bring them to you. Ron asked me to try the rain boots. I said yes. I ain’t mad at all. You can pick them up in person at Rider Boot Shop on Broad Street or shop them online here.
