Lymphatic Massage: What is this New Wellness Trend?
2019 will be the year of self care. It’s not the year of “look better.” It’s the year of “feel better.” As I take you through my any different experiences working out in new ways, eating new foods, and trying out new wellness trends, this is my goal. I want you to wake up with more energy. I want you to be more productive. I want you to spend your hard-earned time and money in the most beneficial ways and with the most effective and deserving businesses. Hopefully you’ll not only feel good, but as a result look good, too.
To kick off this year, I spent more time with Jordan of Indigo. She walked me through my very first lymphatic massage, also known as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD).
Why should you pay attention to your Lymphatic System?
It all started when Jordan invited me to try cupping last fall. I wrote about my massage and cupping experience here. If you read the article, then you know the most important thing about cupping:
The lymphatic system is the best way our bodies get rid of toxins and fight disease. You learned about this in science class in middle school. Many of the lymphatic vessels sit just under the surface of your skin.
One way to get your lymphatic system working harder for you is through cupping. Cupping brings the toxins in your body straight to these vessels so they can do their work faster and more efficiently.
What is Lymphatic Massage?
Unlike cupping, lymphatic massage helps open up the vessels of your lymphatic system through a light, rhythmic pumping motion. Jordan makes this possible with her magical finger tips. It is a very delicate motion and sensation. Don’t expect any deep tissue massage vibes. When these vessels open, they allow your lymphatic liquids to move more freely and therefore more effectively.
Jordan is certified and it shows. She traced her hands along my body over mystery lines only a trained professional could follow. She has the human lymphatic system memorized and mapped out perfectly. She also knew which direction to massage the lymphatic vessels based on the drainage patterns.
And Then What?
Some people can actually feel the channels open and fluids moving because it’s so effective. I felt it when Jordan massaged different areas of my face. I was just getting over a nasty cold. I could actually breathe better within a day of the massage. Manual Lymphatic Drainage is great especially during cold and flu season and for those who suffer from seasonal allergies like me because it boosts your immune system.
Other results? Lymphatic massage eliminates toxins from your body, decreases inflammation, reduces swelling, clears mental brain fog, over time it diminishes the appearance of cellulite, helps remove toxins from the skin that create acne, increases healing following post-surgical procedures.
What do I do afterwards?
Jordan recommended a lymphatic massage once a month or once every other month. She sent me home with a lymphatic elixir from local essential oil maker Maven Made. She suggested I massage different areas of my body gently with this, including my breasts. She also recommended regular exercise, deep breathing exercises, dry brushing. That may very well be our next topic together!
