Sophia Amoruso’s #GIRLBOSS isn’t your typical autobiography/self-help/business book; it’s an uplifting combination of all three. Today, Amanda from Truly Yours, A is sharing her top 5 lessons from the famed book for all the honey’s with hustle.
- Money looks better in the bank than on your feet.
As a fashion blogger, reading this was like a slap in the face; I can’t resist buying something each time I go to the store even though I know don’t need it. Amoruso wrtites, “#GIRLBOSS, when your time spent making money is significantly greater than your time spend spending money, you will be amazed at how much you can save without really thinking about it.” This rings true as I get older and have to think about purchasing a home, getting married and having kids (!!!) pretty soon. Save that money, #GIRLBOSS, you’ll thank yourself later on.
- Failure is your invention.
“It is she who listens to the rest of the world who fails, and it is she who has enough confidence to define success and failure for herself who succeeds,” says Amoruso. If you want to try something new, just do it and don’t get attached to the outcome! Success and failure are two words that are defined differently by each #GIRLBOSS who uses them; what works for someone else may not provide the same results for me and vice versa.
- Treat your thoughts like dollar bills: don’t waste ‘em.
It’s so easy to focus on the negatives, especially if you’re having a bad day (or week or month). Why waste time and energy on things that will only make you sad or mad? “Focus on the positive things in your life and you’ll be shocked at how many more positive things start happening.” Don’t give that person you dislike a second thought; wish them well and move on with your life.
- Be your own role model.
While it’s good to have people you look up to, don’t put those people on such a high pedestal that you feel like you can’t reach it. “I don’t want you to look up to #GIRLBOSS,” says Amoruso. “Because all that looking up can get you down. Be your own idol.” As an up and coming blogger, truer words were never spoken. Comparing myself to other bloggers used to make me feel bad and I often wondered what I was doing wrong. Measuring success by someone else’s standards is the wrong way to live a successful life.
- Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle. – Abraham Lincoln
If I had to chose one word for this year, it would be “hustle.” It’s a word that was instilled in me from birth. My mom and dad hustled to give my siblings and I the best life experiences. I hustled in school for good grades to get accolades and a college acceptance letter. I hustle at work for promotions (and, if we’re being honest, to pay the bills). The importance of hard work cannot be a lost concept in 2016. Working hard and pushing for what I really want will always be more rewarding than sitting back and hoping I get lucky.
I truly feel like there’s a message for all types of girls (or dudes!) in this book, whether you want to blog, start your own successful business, or go to school and get that degree. If you want your own dose of lessons and inspiration, I suggest going out and buying your own copy of #GIRLBOSS right now!
