A New Favorite Pattern: Black and White Gingham
I spent part of any morning yesterday at The Valentine in Richmond. I was visiting the Pretty Powerful: Fashion and Virginia Women exhibition. I’m working on a short article for RVA Magazine about the very well done feature of female designers, tastemakers and boutique owners from the 19th Century to today. I’ll tell you more about that later. As I made my way through the rows of hats, dresses, and ensembles, I came upon one playsuit I knew I would wear today. It was worn by James A. Figg in 1948. It featured a black and white gingham pattern. See it to the right here.
The spotlight on this pattern came at just the right time to validate my recent obsession. I have been coveting black and white gingham for a month or so now. This dress from Mod & Soul is case and point. I’ve also added a black and white gingham pattern blouse to my closet, which has been perfect for work or play. I am stalking other items, from bathing suits to shoes. I’ve linked to everything I’ve fallen in love with so far below.
Why do I love this pattern? Firstly, as demonstrated by The Valentine, it’s timeless. It is also made for summertime cotton ensembles. It allows you to feel dressed up, even if you’re wearing jeans and a blouse. While I think gingham is adorable in a variety of colors, only in this black and white form does it take on a more sophisticated aesthetic. When the gingham pattern is a mix of pinks, greens and yellows, it feels a bit like Easter Sunday anytime you wear it. With the black and white gingham pattern, you can wear it to happy hour and the board room.
