I tell my friends, clients, and followers all the time that coats and jackets are the one thing you can always stand to have more of. You almost always need a jacket every day, even in the summer. They’re the one item of clothing the world sees most often, so it’s best that it’s not some dowdy Northface fleece. That’s okay when you’re hanging out in the ski lodge, but not walked out for a fun lunch date or heading in to an important meeting.

I typically invest in coasts in jackets like I do shoes–chose neutrals and colors that go with with everything. That keeps things simple when you get dressed in the morning. Your closet still needs those “wow” toppers. When you find a statement coat that you think might be right for you, ask yourself a few things:

1. It is flattering?
2. Can I wear it with multiple items?
3. Does it make me smile?
4. Is it unlike anything I own?

Right now is an excellent time to shop for a statement coat. Winter sales are heating up and people are cleaning out their closets as a part of new years resolutions. I found my new furry statement coat at Goodwill. I can’t turn anywhere on the internet with out hearing about another winter sale. So, I made sure you could shop for yours no matter where you are. Here are three options:

My Rules to Rocking Your Furry Statement Coat

When you pull out the funky coat you scored, reserve it for your more basic pieces. You want the coat the shine and make sure you aren’t drowned by the fluff. Here are a few ideas:

1. Wear your skinny jeans with heels or flats. Make sure you’re still elongating your legs.
2. Rock your flares with heels only. This is a rule that always applies when wearing flares.
3. Stick to solid colors or graphic tee-shirts. Let the faux fur texture shine.
4. Pull your hair up. Don’t let it disappear into the jacket or risk getting.
