Travel Guide to Farmville, VA

Fun fact, I actually know many people from Farmville, VA. Specifically, I know people who attended college at Longwood University. I interviewed alumni for the Day After Graduation podcast. As a producer, I tracked down inspiring stories about graduates that went far beyond their degrees and careers. It was an inspiring two-year-long assignment. With each person I interviewed, no matter their personal story, each one expressed a deep love for the town of Farmville, VA.

Recently, I spent three days and two nights in Farmville. My cousin and I were looking for a getaway that wasn’t exhausting but was also inspiring. With our family and friends in mind, we also wanted to go somewhere we could feel safe and had plenty of space for socially distanced adventures. Here’s how our trip went:

Check in to Hotel Weyanoke
This well-placed hotel has been around since 1925. Hotel Weyanoke is the most convenient place to stay to see all Farmville has to offer. You can get anywhere on foot or by bike from here. Recently renovated, the hotel now features a chic array of modern mid-century décor and local artwork. We whipped out our phones as soon as we arrived. We had to capture it all. Every detail was considered during the remodel.

Head to the Catbird Rooftop for Sunset

Make sure to boogie up to Catbird atop the hotel before sunset. The signature drinks are served strong. The wine and beer lists are well-curated. The appetizers are unique yet still inspired by the classics.  There’s something to please everyone! You can get a 360-degree view of the town of Farmville. Grab a map on your way up to see what you can pick out from above. Plan out your adventures perched above the town.
Walk to North Street Press Club for Dinner
Less than a block away is the North Street Press Club. This was our favorite meal during the trip. Inside, there’s a chic lounge vibe with pool tables and modern couches. Outside, the lights criss-cross a wide-open space. The menu is a blend of Thai, American and Mediterranean apps and entrees. We grubbed on the Ahi Tuna Tartar and Pad Thai. Both plates were wiped clean!

Head to Coffee and Breakfast at Uptown Coffee Cafe

Walk or bike to breakfast. My cousin and I both love trying lattes from new cities. In Farmville, we recommend Uptown Coffee. We came back the next day because we were so happy the first. We also ordered up sandwiches before our big bike ride to the High Bridge. They have gluten-free options, so I was able to indulge in a yummy breakfast sandwich.

Bike out to The High Bridge
This was a must for us during our Farmville visit! We borrowed bikes from the Hotel Weyanoke. If you are staying elsewhere, rent them from the Outdoor Adventure Store at the Farmville Downtown Plaza. Hop on the trail from Main Street.  The entire trail is 31 miles long. It’s about 4 miles out to the most popular photo spot–the 2,400-foot long bridge that stands and 125 feet above the Appomattox River. That’s where we took these photos! Along the way, you’ll see other parking lots for people joining the trail at different points. People will smile and say, “Hi!” as you pass them–say “Hi!” right back. Everyone was respectfully maintaining social distance.
Grab a glass of Vino at Charley’s Waterfront Cafe
This spot is tucked away but opens up to a gorgeous view of a bend in the Appomattox River. Across the bank, we saw a couple having a dreamy picnic as dusk settled. We ordered up glasses of wine to reward ourselves for our big High Bridge bike trip. The server filled our wine glasses up full, and we ordered some simple appetizers to hold us over. We enjoyed the heavy pour and sat in quiet for a while, watching the light change as the sun set.

Enjoy Margaritas + Apps at one19

This spot was recommended by Richmond Food writer Robey Martin. The tequila bar and restaurant menu features Southwestern, Tex-Mex influenced cuisine with lots of seafood options. We ordered blistered shishito peppers, fresh guacamole, and fish tacos (on special). Everything was seasoned well and refreshing. The restaurant decor was modern yet rustic. We felt like the cool kids here. We cleaned our plates, yet again.
There’s not a late crowd here in Farmville, but there is a fun crowd. Get out and meet some new people. They won’t bite, especially in Farmville. Everyone we met on our adventures was friendly and laid back. They live in this sweet town on purpose, after all! We met open-minded friends and even dogs at The Brew House. We ordered up classic rail cocktails and Jager Bombs if we’re being honest. We enjoyed the karaoke and lots of laughs. Down the road, Three Roads Brewing has a spacious beer garden and a long beer list on tap for connoisseurs.

Wake up for Walker’s Diner Brunch
After a day of adventure and night of drinking comes the burning yearn for a classic diner breakfast.  Walker’s Diner was a must-visit according to many people we consulted ahead of our visit to Farmville. Inside, the retro bar is lined with silver stools with round cushions. We ordered up the crispy chicken biscuit with chipotle honey and a breakfast special. You’d be surprised how much two girls can eat. We finished things off again. We headed to Uptown Coffee for a latte to sip on while we shopped…
Shop Furniture + Antiques
Farmville is most known for it’s Green Front Furniture stores. You’ll see as you walk through town that several buildings are carrying a collection of rugs, furniture, fixtures, and home decor from a variety of brands.  The prices were very affordable for big-ticket home pieces. This is where family members go when it’s time to redo an entire room in the house–you can get it all in one place. Keep moseying around town to discover stores like the  Sleeping Bee, Funky Flamingo, Penelope and the Vintage Antique Shack.

Farmville Holiday Visit Ideas:

Things will be a little different for holiday travel this year. Instead of big crowds and exotic vacations, heading to small towns will be an ideal way to fuel your wanderlust and need for peace. This travel guide to Farmville, Virginia, wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t suggest a few ideas to visit during the holiday season in 2021.

  • Walk the town and see the holiday lights. They’ll be perched in business windows throughout the adorable streets of Farmville. Peer inside. See something you like? Go inside to shop for antiques, furniture, clothing, and more.
  • See the trees. There will be two big ones to check out. In the Farmville Plaza, a 26-foot beauty will be gorgeous. And, no, it’s not fake!  Hop over to Hotel Weyanoke to see their tree covered in snowflakes created by local businesses.
  • Get a deal to stay at Hotel Weyanoke. During the fall, Hotel Weyanoke is offering 15% off. Click this link to book now.
