“Watch out. Bras are often booby-trapped.” ― Tiffany Reisz, The Siren
A Black Romper and No Bra
In my recent travels to the North West, I noticed a movement not embraced here in the South East: no bras. I embraced this liberation movement by rocking a backless romper in Portland and did some research. It turns out, there are a lot of people who feel very passionately about going bra-free. Here are some clips for consideration:
“Bras have no benefit besides making breasts more sexually appealing. The myth that wearing bras will keep breasts from sagging is aggressively false. In fact, it’s actually better for your mammary glands to just be free, increasing strength in your chest muscles, thus, firming up the girls.” – Melissa Aguilera, Uloop, “Burning Bras and Boobs at Work”
“The Free the Nipple movement gives voice to the many layers of female oppression in this country. They are fighting against body shaming and against society’s need to control women’s bodies. Women can potentially face arrest in America for being nude in public and can even face fines for breast feeding in public. Free the Nipple seeks to empower women by protesting against the perceived obscenity surrounding women’s bodies.” – Anna Suarez, Portland State University Vanguard, “Breast Liberation is Women’s Liberation”
“Even as someone with smaller boobs, I noticed more back pain arising once I stopped wearing bras with support. From my experience, it can be more difficult to maintain good posture as well. If the pain persists (especially if your breasts are larger) and wearing a bra seems to relieve said pain, I definitely recommend wearing the bra. But that doesn’t necessarily mean returning to the wires and cups. I’ve found that wearing a well-made and supportive sports bra does wonders for relieving the tension in my back, and my posture always improves while wearing one, too.” -Meg Zulch, Bustle, “7 Things That Happened When You Stop Wearing a Bra.”
My take?
I think you invent your own version of what makes you feel beautiful and comfortable to YOU. I, personally, thinking bras provide some mystery and protection from wandering eyes. A good bra also helps certain tops and dresses fit just right. I am a fashion blogger, after all. I can’t say that I don’t think of a bra as an integral part of my outfits. However, when a romper, dress, or blouse allows for a more ambiguous and flowing silhouette, I leave it behind, especially in the summer heat.
I also think the right bra makes the difference. Do yourself a favor and get fitted. Try Fiamour for expert advice online or in the store in Richmond, VA. Also, if you aren’t ready to go full no-bra, a collection of bralettes will get you the comfort you need and some new creative options.
Now, let’s see how I rocked this romper with no bra in Portland, the capital of the No-Bra Movement.

Thanks Sheena! Love that jean jacket do much! It’s a summer staple must have
Bra or no bra, you look ADORABLE and I love your hair. Also, the no bra thing would make it so much easier to wear summer clothing haha. Low backs, open backs, spaghetti straps, all that stuff!
I love this outfit on you! This one would be tricky to find a bra for-plus you don’t need one here. I’m with you, no rules really- but I am most comfortable with something holding the girls in place, plus my clothing fits better. I love bralettes for summer-best invention ever! Great post!
