Hey y’all! Megan here, bringing you all the warm and fuzzy vibes from a recent winter escape to Afton and Crozet, Virginia. Think cozy farmhouse vibes, breathtaking mountain views, a little Virginia wine, yoga, and a whole lot of good food. If you’re looking for a perfect winter weekend getaway, these charming spots in the heart of Virginia wine country are calling your name. Let me take you on the adventure!
Step 1: Check into the Beautiful Veritas Farmhouse
First things first: Where do you lay your head at night? The Veritas Farmhouse (72 Saddleback Farm, Afton, VA 22920) was a breathtaking yet cozy choice. Tucked away just outside of Veritas Vineyards this six-room bed and breakfast is pure Virginia magic. The Farmhouse was built in 1836 and has been beautifully preserved, offering a refreshing blend of history, elegance, and comfort.
The moment you arrive, you’ll feel that calm, cozy warmth surround you and also be taken by the whimsical decor, views out of every window, and classic farmhouse touches. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, and you can truly unwind.
During the evening, you can enjoy a farm-to-table dinner most nights. In addition, guests can enjoy a cozy complimentary wine hour to try some of the vineyards red and white wines. Breakfast comes with your stay and also features fresh, local ingredients, gourmet specials, champagne and French press coffee to start your day.
Step 2: Explore the Local Vineyards and Wineries
Once you’re settled, you’ll want to explore the area. Afton and Crozet have a robust collection of wineries and breweries to choose from.
Top of our list is Hazy Mountain Vineyards (3891 Vineyard Dr, Afton, VA 22920). This winery has one of the most spectacular views in the area–you’ll have to spin on your feet to get it all on your phone. The food menu is fantastic, with gluten-free options for their pizzas and flatbreads. YSavor every sip and bite as you take in the surrounding beauty over wine and other drinks available.
And of course, the surrounding wineries and drinking holes are worth a visit too:
- Flying Fox Vineyard (5565 Morgan Ford Rd, Afton, VA 22920). If you want a fun, festive atmosphere, this place has you covered. They do an incredible holiday pop-up, Christmas Vacation, complete with themed decor and plenty of wine, vermouth, and cocktails to keep you warm.
- Blue Mountain Brewery & Winery (9519 Critzers Shop Rd, Afton, VA 22920). It’s a vibe—whether you’re cozying up by a firepit or enjoying the mountain views from the patio. You’ll feel like you’re at a mountain lodge, with great vibes inside and out. If you’re gluten-free, they make it easy to filter the menu options.
- Crozet Pizza ( 5794 The Square, Crozet, VA 22932) Don’t skip this local institution. This pizzeria has been featured in multiple magazines over the years, and their gluten-free crust is fantastic. Whether you’re looking for a full meal, snacks, or cocktails, it’s the perfect stop.
- Fardowners (5775 The Square, Crozet, VA 22932) If you’re looking for a dive bar vibe with some great local food, this spot is a fun choice.
- Blue Ridge Pig (8735 Rockfish Valley Hwy, Nellysford, VA 22958) This no-frills BBQ joint is a local favorite. It’s been serving up some of the best BBQ in the area since 1988. It’s a bit of a shack, but trust us—the food is worth it! Just be ready for an outdoor dining experience.
Step 3: A Sparkling Stroll through the Veritas Vineyard Illuminated
I had the best time exploring the Veritas Vineyard Illuminated holiday experience. Watch my Instagram reel recap from 2023 here. The vineyards were twinkling with lights, creating a magical winter wonderland. Hit the tasting room first for drinks, alcoholic and non, to warm up before a stroll through the crisp air and light maze. Return to snuggle up by the fire inside and enjoy late night snacks the vineyard awlays does so well.
Step 4: Morning Yoga in the Shenandoah
Nothing beats starting your day with some peaceful, restorative yoga, especially in such a stunning location. Locals recommended Santosha Yoga in Crozet. The studio has such a serene vibe, and the instructors really help you connect with the beauty of the area while calming your mind. Check out their class schedule and see if a class fits into your winter getaway.
Step 5: Grab Coffee and Snacks on Your Way Home
Before you head back home, make sure to grab a coffee and snack from one of the local gems. These spots are perfect for those cozy, yet elevated country vibes before you hit the road:
- Praha Bakery (5781 The Square, Crozet, VA 22932). This adorable Bohemian bakery near Santosha Yoga is perfect for a quick stop. They have delicious gluten-free muffins, protein egg bites, and cakes, and the space itself feels like a little slice of Europe. Open 7am-5pm.
- Mudhouse Coffee (Crozet) – 5793 The Square, Crozet, VA 22932. You can’t visit Crozet without stopping by Mudhouse for a coffee fix. The coffee is always on point, and their cozy atmosphere is the perfect send-off for your trip.
- Greenwood Grocery (1117 Church St, Crozet, VA 22932) If you need snacks for the road, Greenwood Grocery is a charming spot with a selection of gourmet goodies, sandwiches, and local wine.
- Wendell House (5791 The Square, Crozet, VA 22932) A quirky, whimsical general store that’s perfect for picking up last-minute items or browsing unique finds.
