Update on Freelance Life + White Button Down Look

White Button Down Look: My New Version of Office Wear

Ya’ll, it’s been 20 DAYS since my last outfit post. I’m not sure I’ve gone that long since I started Sweet Sauce more than 2 years ago. There have been a few posts about events  and Goodwill inspiration, but the style side of Sweet Sauce has been missing and I’m sorry.  I thought I’d take a minute to update you on why I’ve been a little MIA and then we’ll get to this cute little white button down look.

How I Got Here

I started Sweet Sauce because I found myself fighting to feel fulfilled in my 9-5. I wound up there after the recession when I was recruited into the nonprofit world.  I was a freelance writer for Style Weekly right out of college. The journalism world was volatile because the internet and social media came out of nowhere and no one had a plan. So while everyone figured that out, I raised money and awareness for Richmond area nonprofits. It still wasn’t quite right, so I started a side project, which became Sweet Sauce.

Sweet Sauce has grown into a mini career all its own thanks to those who have supported my blog from the beginning. You have helped me build my confidence, extend my reach, and discover what I’m really good at doing for myself and for others. Sweet Sauce has therefore become a launching pad for other projects and freelance work.  Here are a few recent announcements you might like to know about…

This White Button Down Look

In honor of all the love I’ve gotten from the Richmond community lately, this look is for you.

Since I don’t report to an office much, I have a lot of freedom when it comes to what I wear every day. (Reason 2,345 why I have been making the move to work for myself). I bounce around to coffee shops for interviews, into client’s closets, and out to boats on the eastern shore to take photos. I’m always mixing up basics like this white button down. I can make anything work for any occasion.

The Shirt
Confession: this shirt is from a client’s closet! I don’t usually keep items, but she was my size and I’d been hunting for this. Of course, I asked! It’s long and sits just right over my curves. A lot of long-line or tunic tops just get caught up on my butt. #keepinitreal

The Jeans
My favorite jeans ever are from Sweetest Stitch (also a writing client). These babies hit pretty high on the waist and are very flattering. They get softer with every wash. I wear them multiple days a week. Until I spill something on them…

The Shoes
The platform velvet blush pink heels are comfortable for every day wear. My friend and owner of Mod & Soul sent them to me knowing I’d love them. She was right, as usual. I’m excited to mix these up with more formal looks.

The Bandana
After watching the trend for a while, I finally stumbled upon some bandanas and neck scarves I love. I found this one will playing tour guide with one of my favorite bloggers, Alicia Tenise. She graduated from VCU, moved to DC, and is now headed to Philly and pursuing blogging full-time. After brunching with some other babes at Social 52, I took Alicia to spots like Quirk, Mod & Soul, and then Blue Bones Vintage. I found this light pink handkerchief. It needs a few cases to get a little softer, but I’m into it. I also picked up a light pink body suit… oh yeaaaaah.
