Festival in the Big City
I recently attended the Governors Ball in New York City. This was a very different experience than the camping festivals I have attended in the past. No mud and mechanics here. It was held on Randall’s Island in New York City, just outside of Manhattan. The festival lineup inlcuded Drake, Lana Del Ray, The Black Keys, Tame Impala and many more fame worthy artists. The attendees weren’t so bad themselves. We even spotted a squad of Victoria Secret models. I saw every fabulous outfit that my mind could imagine and much more. There were a lot of trends on repeat around the Island: pastel hair, high-waisted shorts, matching two-piece dresses, chambray shirts, rolled-up jeans… You can see some of the best fashion recaps I’ve read on the web here, here, and here.
Comfort was key for me and my man. It might be New York, but 8 hours on your feet is something to consider. Layers were also important because a lot happens weather wise in 8 hours. We were happy to have a second (even third) layer at night to combat temperature changes. My hat saved my pretty little face from the sun. My oversized hobo bag was also key. Mary Poppins has nothing on me. Here are my outfits for Saturday and Sunday:
I only took my camera for the first day of the festival. I was mostly overwhelmed. The last day, there wasn’t even a place to sit because there were so many people. I was on fashion overload. I quickly realized I was not going to do the thorough job I wanted while also enjoying the festival for myself. So, I just snapped here and there when I felt like it.
Despite my excitement about all the self expression, what I really came away with was inspiration from all the people and their relationships on display with friends, family, and lovers. So here’s a little homage to them:
Cheers to the mom who brought her 10-year old and was weighed down by five different kinds of bags but danced with her daughter to Hot Chip with all her fury. Cheers to the girl who HAD to keep dancing when she ate her dinner, finger licking and all. Cheers to the guys who waited an hour for Ramen Burger so their other friends could charge their phones. Cheers to the friends who made a flag with Karl’s name to make sure he always knew he had a home. Cheers to the friends who came to just be together and bath in their friendship glory. Cheers to the couples who never broke hands for fear of being separated. Cheers to the two friends who brought a journal to write in together? What were they writing?!
Here are few of my favorite shots.

What a great write up! Sounds like you had just a fabulous time. Your writing talents inspire me to learn more about writing 🙂 That may not ever happen, you realize. I recently went on a wonderful trip with Lew and I was able to take a LOT of photos to capture our memories. That’s going to fill the giant gap of writing skills 😉
