Ever Had a Hair Home?
Your hair stylist is much like your doctor… They see you through sickness, health, divorce, and other really weird experiences. You should feel comfortable enough to relax, open enough to listen, and always satisfied with the end result, much like with your doctor. Finding a place you can call home is just as important for your body as it is for your hair.
For years, I went to the Aveda salon by my college. I even traveled out of my way after I graduated. I loved the natural products and I was attached to a talented stylist named Chris. He helped me cut seven inches from my hair when I got a divorce. Then he left. I met another stylist who was so sweet and made me love my new blonde hair. Eventually, she told me about how poorly the stylists were treated at the salon. She left and is in school to be an interior designer. (Yay for her!)
Since, I’ve been hair homeless. There are so many wonderful stylists in Richmond and I’ve had the privilege of meeting many during the past few years. I’ve still felt a bit lost, though. I never thought I’d meet my hair gal in a yoga studio. Actually, my boyfriend met her first. He got a fabulous hair cut by Shannon Harrison at Moore Street Studio, her home hair and yoga studio. He looked good. Like really good. Then, Shannon subbed a class at Shockoe Slip Yoga and I finally had the pleasure of meeting her in person. Weeks later, I complained to my man about not knowing where to go to get my roots fixed, and he pushed me to visit Shannon.
Moore Street Studio
Shannon Harrison is Richmond’s best kept hair secret. The talented yogi has transformed her home into a private yoga studio and hair salon. Here, she welcomes guests with tea, wine, and warm advice. Shannon is obviously skilled with color, look at her beautiful hair! The scissors are also her friend. She has given me my favorite hair cut to date. I have thin hair that can often fall limp. She created structure and movement with undetectable layers.
Since I began visiting Shannon, I’ve sent my yoga studio owner to her to get new bangs and a close friend to transform his hair after decades of the same cut. Both were glowing and pleased customers. I trust they may have also found their hair home. The last time I visited, a couple was on their way out. Both had their hair cut and colored by Shannon. It felt like aunt and uncle leaving after Thanksgiving dinner. They were happy and relaxed.
The Finished Product
I’ve been yapping about my pink hair ever since I had pink hair. Thanks to other talented Richmond hair stylists, including Joshua Cruz-Magee and Brittany Ross, I took the plunge early in 2016 to dye my hair pink after harnessing a fun vision for a couple years.
When I connected with Shannon earlier this year, I simply wanted to get my blonde looking good again. She did just that and made my highlights last longer than ever.
When she nudged me later this fall as my roots were showing, we both decided it was time to do something fun again. She proclaimed “Teal!” and I yelped “Pink!” Then, Shannon smiled and said “Unicorn Hair!” I was in.
Shannon fixed my blonde highlights on top and began to weave in pink and teal underneath. I couldn’t be more excited about the finished product! Check it out on a windy day below… See the outfit post here.
Shannon’s tip to keep your color longer: Wash your hair less often! I’ve been trying out this Loreal clay hair mask, shampoo + conditioner. Been going 3 to 4 days without washing my hair. That’s a big improvement!
