Downton Abbey: Going Out in Style

“Tell me, does it ever get cold on the moral high ground?”

– Lady Grantham, Downton Abbey, Season 6, Episode 1

Thanks to a good friend, I recently started watching Downton Abbey. The PBS historical fiction series has stolen many hearts and imaginations around the world. The fashion has also captured the attention of ladies and gents alike. The styles from the Edwardian Era (1900-1919) to the roaring 20s obviously have inspired Richmond locals and east coast fans who traveled to Altria Theater to be a part of the country’s largest Downton Abbey events on Saturday, January 2. I sat next to one woman who had traveled from Raleigh.

This Saturday, I was stunned by the details and creativity of the outfits worn by fans. They swung and danced to the fabulous band at the reception preceding the screening. Food and drinks would have been up to Lady Grantham’s standards. Here are a few highlights from the reception! (If you see someone who know, share the article and I’ll be happy to email a copy of the photo!)

A special presentation from Maymont pulled exceptionally dressed guests on stage to discuss the elements of their outfits and how they help punctuate different moments in history. There were a lot of shout outs to Bygones Vintage Clothing and Halcyon Vintage.

There was rumor of an actor from the show who may appear at the event. Actor Kevin McNally came on stage and generated some excitement. He appeared in Season 2. After a lot of chit chatting and stalling, he got to the point: his wife, Phyllis Logan who plays Miss Hughes. He introduced her to the stage. She received a shrieking standing ovation from the packed theater. I would have thought it was Mick Jagger. I had to cover my ears. She shared with fans how much she’d enjoyed visiting Richmond, which has been a bucket list item for some time. Go on, Phyllis, you’re making us blush.

On to what I wore… with a few in black and white just for fun. I went with a transitional outfit mixing the conservatism of the Edwardian era and a bit of beads to take me into the 20s. Thanks to Bygones Vintage Clothing for the hat, skirt, fishnets and necklace! I’m realizing how gorgeous the fabric of my skirt is after checking out my photos…
