How to Keep Your Hair Blonde for Longer
As you guys know, I’ve gotten a little upgrade to my hair at Rituals Salon. That’s in addition to an upgrade to my nails and muscles thanks to the team there, as well. The full service spa has become sort of my new beauty home. It feels warm and welcoming while its staff are also professional and precise. It’s been one of my greater discoveries in 2019. My hair is probably in the best shape and color it ever has been. I owe it to Senior Stylist Erin at Rituals. One of my biggest challenges before was the way my color faded, turned brassy, and felt unkempt more quickly than I’d like. After two visits, Erin and I put together a list of tips for anybody rocking faux blonde hair.
Use the Right Products
Between the cut and colors, it’s all about how you take care of your blonde hair. You want to protect your color and keep it healthy at the same time. That includes shampoo, conditioner, and heat protectant. Below are some of the products Erin led me too and a few I’ve discovered along the way. You’ll note the “purple shampoo,” which often comes with questions. I use that once or twice a week either mixed into my regular Eurfora shampoo or alone. I leave it on when I wash my face or shave my legs.
Shampoo Less
Erin shared that hard water can be especially rough on your hair color. Hard water, unfortunately, is what we are dealing with here in the city. In some cases with blondes, it can cause an orange or green tint. Obviously, we don’t want this! In order to keep from washing my hair as much, I have a few tips. Firstly, I use dry shampoo after day 2. Lately, that’s been the Davines Hair Refresher. To ensure I get the most out of it, I actually spray my roots and let it sit for a few minutes before I brush it out and style it. It helps it lock onto my strands better. After day 3, I reach for bobby pins, headbands, and hair clips to lift up the front-most strands away from my face–they get the dirtiest first. By day 4 or so, we’re putting it all back for a sleek look or keeping a beanie on in the winter. Below are a few pieces I keep close.
Trim and Touch-Up Regularly
Regular touch ups to color actually help your color stay stronger for longer. Go in 6-8 weeks for partial highlight rather than 10-12 week for a full blonde highlights. Adding in a trim also means your hair looks healthier. It’s no secret faux blonde locks have the hardest time. I find that a fresh trim means I have to try less when I style my hair. Healthy hair means healthy looking color. Everyone is different, though. The trick is to get on a schedule.
